How do I preview my survey on checkout extensions?

Shopify doesn't allow us to display a preview of your specific survey inside the checkout editor. When you add the Fairing app block, Shopify shows a generic preview of what a survey looks like, and you can click through it to test each question type.

Previewing your real survey

The Preview button in Fairing loads your live questions against a real, recent transaction from your store. That's how it shows exactly what a customer would see, including targeting.

Because it needs a real transaction to work from, the preview can fail with an error even when everything is set up correctly. The usual cause: there is no transaction yet that matches the question you're previewing. For example, if a question is targeted to Returning Customers and your store hasn't had a returning customer order since install, there is nothing to preview against. The question will still work for live customers once a matching order comes in.

If you'd rather see it on an order, open a recent order's status page. As long as that customer hasn't answered yet, the survey will render there.

If the survey isn't showing at all

  • Confirm the Fairing app block is added to both the Thank You page and the Order Status page in the checkout editor, and that the pages are saved. Fairing shows a "confirmed" status in Settings once it detects the block.

  • Confirm at least one question is set to Live and its target includes the customer you're testing with.

  • Surveys show for every completed checkout regardless of payment method, including Shop Pay.

Survey looks off (missing button, wrong colors)

The survey inherits styling from your Shopify checkout settings. If the Submit button is hard to see, your checkout's button color is blending with the background; other buttons on the page will be doing the same. Adjust it in Shopify's checkout branding, not in Fairing. Note that Single Response questions with Auto Advance enabled submit on click and don't show a Submit button at all.
