How Question Stream order, targeting, and follow-ups work together
Last updated: October 14, 2026
The Question Stream is your survey. Every question you turn on appears in the stream, and customers see them one after another after checkout. This article explains the three things that most often surprise people: how order controls what a customer sees, how follow-ups attach to a question, and what you can and can't change on a question type.
Order dictates what a customer sees
Questions are shown to a customer in the order they appear in your Question Stream, filtered by each question's target. A customer who matches the target of several questions will see them in stream order.
This matters when you mix targets. For example, if a question targeted to All Customers sits above a question targeted to New Customers, a new customer will see the All Customers question first and the New Customers question second. Returning customers will only see the All Customers question.
If you want "How did you hear about us?" to be the first thing a new customer sees, drag it to the top of the stream. Order is per account, so if you run multiple stores, check each one.
To change the order, see How do I change the order my questions are displayed in?
Adding a second question (not a follow-up)
To ask a completely new question after the first one, click the + or New Question button on the Questions page. Set it live and it will appear in the stream after the question above it. You do not need to attach it to the first question.
Follow-ups (Response Clarification)
A follow-up is a second question that appears only when a customer picks a specific answer. For example, if a customer picks "Instagram" on "How did you hear about us?", a follow-up can ask "Was it an ad, a creator, or our own account?"
Follow-ups can be added to Single Response and NPS questions only.
Multiple Response questions cannot have follow-ups.
On the question edit page, open the response option you want to clarify and add the follow-up beneath it.
Each follow-up response is stored as its own row in exports, linked to the same transaction.
Single Response vs. Multiple Response
There is no cap on how many options a customer can pick on a Multiple Response question. If you want "pick your top 3", say so in the question prompt; customers can still pick more.
Auto Advance (submit automatically on click) is only available on Single Response questions and their follow-ups. Multiple Response questions always show a Submit button.
For attribution questions like "How did you hear about us?", we recommend Single Response. When given a Multiple Response question, most customers still pick one option, and a single most-important answer is more reliable to act on than several equally weighted ones.
Changing a question's type
A question's type (Single Response, Multiple Response, Open Ended, NPS) cannot be switched from the edit page. If the question has not collected responses yet, delete it and create a new one with the right type. If it already has responses, contact support and we can migrate the data to a new question so your history is preserved.
